Thanksgiving 2009 was held at St. Louis Catholic Church in Cathedral City. The Youth Group, under the leadership of Martha and Ernesto Luna, carved all the turkeys prepared by the Well, and helped the Well staff with all of the other food preparation as well, and helped organize everything that was needed for a very special Thanksgiving Day. The day was filled with Mariachi music and a great DJ, while the kids from the Church painted the children's faces.
Christmas at the Convention Center 2009 turned out more than 2500 people. Guests arrived to the mariachi music of Ben Camargo and his fellow musicians, who also entertained on the stage and strolling through the packed room. Two others brought beautiful vocal sounds to the event; Mr. Fleet Easton and Dr. Henry Pugh. The audience loved them. This years' event was sponsored by the Well in the Desert, the Auen Foundation and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Rob Parkins once again gave delight to the children with his genius puppetry and ventriloquism, while Sam led the face-painting with more than seven others who produced incredible designs and faces and gave such joy to the hundreds of children who flocked there. Also in the foyer was Matthew Lynn, who with the help of his mom, Board member Barbara Lynn and many other volunteers produced a plethora of arts and crafts to the delight of hundreds of happy children. All these activities combined to create a loving and beautiful vision of what Christmas is all about.
The dinner was prepared by Savoury's at the Convention Center, along with the assistance of Well staff. It consisted of ham, turkey, stuffing, yams, mashed potatoes, fresh cooked broccoli, salad and desserts. Every year for many the desserts have been graciously donated by Tom and Tricia Prentice, angels themselves and great supporters of the Well. There were over 267 volunteers in attendance and each one gave their all in making sure all there were well taken care of.
And then there was Santa and Mrs. Claus who gave out over 1200 toys to children who ranged from one month to sixteen years of age.
The success of the day came from the combined efforts of all: Well staff, Convention Center staff, Savoury's, volunteers, Board members, and all of the guests who were so very grateful for all they were given on this special day of Christmas.
Christmas 2010 will once again be at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Saturday, December 25, 2010.
